About Us |
Chamberlain’s Mental Health Services (CMHS) is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1976. It is located in Gilroy, California and is affiliated with Chamberlain’s Children Center in Hollister, California, sharing a common CEO, Board of Directors and Administrative Support Services.
From its inception, Chamberlain’s has a history of providing quality services and meeting the needs of the community. CMHS began as a foster home in 1973, when community members approached Clara Chamberlain and talked about the desperate need for foster homes. In response to this need, Clara began a foster home in San Martin.
As the needs of the community grew and changed, she developed day care services and residential programs. The needs of South County took her in the direction of intensive day treatment services.
So, in 1976 Clara developed two corporations; 1) a residential center in Hollister and 2) intensive day treatment services in San Martin through Santa Clara County Mental Health.
With the continued growth of the community, in 1986, Chamberlain’s developed a school based Day Treatment (DTx) program in Morgan Hill Unified School District, and then moved to Gilroy. It became obvious that South County’s need for DTx services reached beyond the isolated and restrictive school sites, so in 1988 CMHS left the schools and moved into the community to serve the entire South County.
At this time, at the request of the County, CMHS also began outpatient and medication services at the clinic. However, CMHS realized that having clients come to the clinic was not an effective way to reach this population. The South County is 47% Latino and many residents are apprehensive about going into clinics. So CMHS began outreach services, where it offered workshops in the community and sent its staff into the homes of the extended family.
CMHS business hours are 8am to 5pm; however, some evening appointments are available to accommodate the working parent(s).
